The two quietest weeks of the Hampshire AI calendar are behind us. The Winchester webinar and Portsmouth Life Solved lecture both ran before this edition lands. What remains is substantive: the Hampshire AI flagship evening at Axis is just four days away and still has places, the fraud-awareness session at Barclays Eagles Lab follows later in the week, and a practical leadership workshop runs in the New Forest before the end of the month. Looking further ahead, the University of Southampton's five-day geospatial AI summer school opens in mid-July, and the British Science Festival - which includes a dedicated "AI: Friend or Fraud?" public lecture - arrives in September. The full BSF programme lands in early July, so next edition will carry a more detailed preview.

📰 Hampshire AI in the News

  • Grok AI falsely identified a former Hampshire officer in Henry Nowak case, forcing her into hiding

AI chatbot Grok confidently and incorrectly named former PC Christi Hill as one of the officers who arrested Henry Nowak in Southampton, despite her having left Hampshire Constabulary over a year before the incident; she was relocated for her safety after a barrage of online threats - a stark local example of AI hallucination causing direct personal harm and a signal to any organisation using AI for fact-checking or identity tasks.

  • AI-designed universal coronavirus vaccine passes first human trial at University Hospital Southampton

Cambridge spinout DIOSynVax's AI-designed "super-antigen" vaccine, built to protect against a broad family of coronaviruses including SARS-CoV-2, cleared its Phase I safety trial with no significant side effects; the study was sponsored by UHS and conducted at the NIHR Southampton Clinical Research Facility, marking the first time a vaccine designed entirely by AI has been tested in humans and placing Hampshire at the centre of a landmark life sciences milestone.

  • New AI tool colour-codes the body during live surgery

Surgeons at St Mark's, the National Bowel Hospital, used an AI tool to highlight different parts of the anatomy in real time during a live operation, with connective tissue, nerves and other structures colour-coded on screen to assist precision; the tool works alongside robotic and laparoscopic surgery and represents a meaningful step forward in AI-assisted clinical practice of direct relevance to Hampshire's surgical and health-tech community.
