The last fortnight's headline events have now run: the Microsoft Cloud South Coast BBQ Social at the Ageas Bowl and the Women in Tech Hampshire panel at Southampton Science Park both wrapped up before this edition landed. What's ahead is a quieter but substantial run through the summer. The University of Southampton's five-day geospatial AI summer school kicks off Monday at Highfield Campus, followed swiftly by a free, practitioner-focused workshop on making physical sciences data AI-ready. Things go quiet for the rest of July and most of August before picking back up: the Microsoft Cloud South Coast User Group returns to its usual first-Tuesday slot on 4 August, and Developer South Coast resumes after its summer break in September with a session on driving real Copilot adoption inside organisations. The big one, though, is the British Science Festival, whose full programme dropped on 2 July — five days across Southampton in September with AI running through several headline sessions, including a Presidential Address on the future of AI from Dame Wendy Hall.

British Science Festival programme lands with AI running through its spine
The British Science Association confirmed on 2 July that its 195th festival - the first in Southampton since 1992 - runs 16–20 September with over 80 free events. AI features heavily: Antonia Marcu's "AI: friend or fraud?" award lecture, an evening of AI-inspired performance at Mayflower Studios, and new British Science Association President Dame Wendy Hall's Presidential Address on where AI is heading, in conversation with the BBC's Zoe Kleinman - a rare chance to hear the Regius Professor of Computer Science address a general public audience.

Open to teams with a UKRI-funded researcher and a genuinely AI-core idea, it culminates in a pitch for a place on a funded six-month accelerator. Applications close 17 August, with the in-person bootcamp running 2–3 September at the Winchester campus.

mytender.io, an AI-driven bid-writing platform founded by University of Southampton undergraduates, secured a £250,000 pre-seed round from Fuel Ventures - the largest investment yet for a student-founded startup at the university. Built through Future Worlds and Southampton Science Park, the platform is already used by 20+ construction and facilities-management clients, and the founders are pushing on to a fully agentic version of the product. A useful reminder of what the Future Worlds/AIR26 pipeline can produce.
