Since Issue 23, Women in Tech Hampshire’s “Working in the World of Data” panel at the Axis Centre has been and gone. The University of Southampton AI Society’s SotonShip hackathon filled Network Eagle Lab. The big date this fortnight is the Microsoft Cloud (South Coast) User Group’s two-day flagship on 22–23 October at the Hilton at the Utilita Bowl.
A lot is still TBC. Hampshire AI’s next event is listed for 17 November, but there’s still no registration link, so keep an eye on spectrumit.co.uk/tech-community/hampshire-ai. PyData Southampton and AI Chinwag both show no upcoming events on their Meetup pages. Developer South Coast usually meets on the third Thursday, but November’s session isn’t posted yet. Women in Tech Hampshire and South Coast Technology Leaders haven’t announced their next dates either.
November is busier than it looked. Basingstoke Business Week runs from 9 to 13 November. On the 11th it has two AI sessions, a fireside chat on AI and cyber security and a look at the employment-law risks of AI at work, and the Skills Summit on the 12th includes AI breakouts. Later in the month, AiLab runs a paid generative AI workshop for construction professionals near Romsey on the 26th. December is still empty, so if you’re organising something, tell us. Looking further ahead, Solent FutureScape returns on 16 March 2027 at King’s Conference Centre, Hedge End, and expressions of interest are open now.
We’re also adding a new section, Deadlines & Opportunities, which will appear whenever there’s a funding call, scholarship, call for speakers or consultation worth acting on. This issue has three: the MHRA’s AI Airlock sandbox for medical device developers, closing for the current review wave on 31 October, and two Innovate UK grant competitions for AI SMEs, closing on 11 and 18 November.

Hampshire County Council looks at AI phone booking for recycling centres
At full council on 1 October, Liberal Democrat councillors called for barriers to recycling centre access to be removed, and their motion was defeated. Responding, the executive member said scrapping the phone line saves around £67,000 a year, and she has asked officers to explore AI-enabled telephone booking as a lower-cost alternative. This is a live local test of whether AI voice systems can address digital exclusion without bringing back the full cost of a staffed line. Published 7 October 2026.

At a governance and audit standards committee meeting, councillors heard that AI-generated complaints are creating extra work for officers because they can contain repetitive, excessive or irrelevant material. Templates shared on social media were also raised, and the council largely deals with each of these individually. It’s a reminder that public-sector AI planning has to cover AI-generated inputs as well as the council’s own tools. Published 17 September 2026.

UK government accepts all 44 recommendations on regulating AI in healthcare
On 6 October the government accepted every recommendation from the National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare. The MHRA committed to draft guidance by December 2026 on managing AI devices that change over time, and a full implementation roadmap is due by spring 2027. Industry bodies welcomed the response but stressed that implementation and international alignment will decide whether it works. The detailed measures haven’t been written yet.Why it matters: health AI developers around University Hospital Southampton and Southampton Science Park now have a clearer direction of travel towards lifecycle monitoring rather than one-off approval.
Read moreWikimedia says “rogue” OpenAI agents edited wikis and flooded its servers
The Wikimedia Foundation found unauthorised edits, mostly in sandbox pages, along with attempts to misuse a citation tool and Etherpad. It also found millions of automated requests, which may have contributed to a partial Wikidata outage in May. There was no evidence that systems or data were compromised. OpenAI said it is working with Wikimedia to analyse the activity.
Why it matters: if you run public APIs, plan for agent traffic, and if you deploy agents, monitor what they actually do once they’re live.
Read moreAnthropic releases Claude Haiku 5.5 at a much lower price
Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 costs around 75% less to run than Haiku 4.5, and it is the first Haiku model with an adjustable effort setting. Sonnet 5.5 cache reads were also halved in price, which Anthropic says cuts most agentic workloads by around 20%.
Why it matters: high-volume jobs such as summarisation, classification and subagents are now much cheaper to run, which helps SMEs that are budgeting for automation.

Mistral opened a public preview of Large 4 on 6 October, with downloadable weights promised by the end of October. The benchmark results are almost all chosen and reported by Mistral itself.
Why it matters: if the weights ship, public-sector and regulated teams get a credible European model they can run on their own infrastructure. Wait for independent testing before relying on it.
